Sports Broadcaster

I’m Jimmy Pursell. I’ve been the voice that now sits beside the Hall of Famer Mike Will for local high school football as well as Hastings College Bronco Football for over 20 years.

I got the shot at broadcasting football games after a bus trip to Arrowhead stadium for a Chiefs game which Mike was on the bus as well. It was an unforgettable trip on the fun bus and the rest is history! But my start was not all luxury; it was a sideline reporter for him. It brought hot weather early in the year and by playoffs it would be so cold my pen would freeze up.

It wasn’t very long after that I was up in the box keeping stats and providing insight of all the games! I’ve got to know a lot of tremendous coaches and outstanding athletes as well as some awesome parents along the years!

Highlights and stories are endless they would make a great book! But one story sticks out is meeting and getting a photo with a Heisman Trophy winner is a once in a lifetime opportunity. That opportunity was with former Husker Eric Crouch who at the time was assistant coach for Midland University.

In my spare time I enjoy Golfing, Hunting, Fishing and working on our river property!

In 2017 Havranek got the itch to do more sports play-by-play and moved 90 miles to the west to Broken Bow to take on the role as both news and sports director.

While the Broken Bow experience was short lived, Havranek said “It was a huge moment for me at that time in my career, I needed games under my belt to get more comfortable, and the Sandhills gave me 13 schools in our listening area to cover equally, I averaged four games a week and it was so beneficial to build up my experience and confidence.”

Tyson took that experience back to KRGI in 2019, where he has spent the past three seasons as the voice of the Central Catholic Crusaders until submitting his resignation in November of 2023 which quickly followed with a phone call to where it all began.

As a broadcaster, Havranek said “I’m always looking ahead to the future of the industry. Make no mistake, the future is in streaming services and I’m grateful Mike wanted to get the band back together to recreate the magic we made almost a decade ago!

Away from the microphone Tyson spends two days a week as an adjunct instructor at Central Community College in Hastings teaching audio design, podcasting and broadcast journalism.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Grand Island Little Theatre, where about once a year you’ll see him on stage.

His downtime consists of baseball trips with his father, scrabble with mother, adding to his vinyl record collection and Spotify sessions with his friends.
